Obituary
Sherman Rice, 79, Swamp Branch, KY., died at his home at 4:30, Saturday afternoon after an extended illness. Mr. Rice a retired farmer and merchant was born June 28, 1867, in Johnson Co.,, a son of Martin R. and Mary Hannah Rice. He was a member of the Paintsville Masonic Lodge No. 381 and was a recently awarded the twenty-five year pin. The farm on which Mr. Rice has spent his entire lifetime is a part of the original farm homesteaded by his pioneer grandfather, John R. Rice, in 1815. In his early life he was quite active in the livestock business, timbering, wholesale and mercantile business. He was also interested in mineral developments in this section. In later years he operated a general store, in addition to actively managing the farm until the last few years of his life. His health had been failing for several years and in June 1945, he underwent a major operation. A second operation was performed in September 1946, from which he never fully recovered. He was interested in all civic activities and lent his aid to any worthwhile project in the community. He was a trusted friend and neighbor and was admired and respected by all who knew him. He had accepted the Lord as his own person savior which helped to sustain and strengthen him during the last months of his illness. Surviving are the wife, Mrs. Emma Price; seven daughters, Mrs. Oscar Rice, Louisa, Katheryn Rice, at home; Mrs. Sherwood K. Fidler, Detroit, MI.; Mrs. James Lloyd Wilkins, Mt. Hope, WV., Mrs. Walter Maurice Baker, Lexington; Mrs. Wallis M. Bailey, Lexington; Mrs. Walter H. Meek, Paintsville; one son, Sherman Rice, Jr. at home and Mrs. Walter H. Meek, Paintsville and thirteen grandchildren. Sherman Rice spent his entire life on the farm on which he was born. He was loved and cherished by all his family and was a true friend and neighbor in his community and was admired and respected by all who knew him. Paintsville Herald Thursday 3-06-1947
OBITUARY Sherman Rice, was born at Riceville, Ky., June 28, 1867. Died March 01, 1947. Age 79 years and 8 months. He was the son of Martin R. and Mary Hannah Rice being the youngest of eight children born to this union, all of who preceded him in death. He was married to Emma Price, Oil Springs, KY, on June 22, 893. He is survived by his wife and eight children namely: Mrs. Oscar Rice, Louisa, Katheryn Rice at home, Mrs. Sherwood F. Filder, Detroit, MI., Mrs. James Lloyd Wilkens, Mt. Hope, WV., Mrs. Walter Maurice Baker, Lexington, Mrs. Wallis M. Bailey, Lexington, Sherman Rice, Jr., at home and Mrs. Walter H. Meek, Paintsville, and thirteen grandchildren. Sherman Rice spent his entire life on the farm on which he was born.
