Obituary
Jerry Patrick, 19, son of Tom and Flossie Burke Patrick of this city, was killed instantly and his cousin, James Morris Burke, 15, son of Raymond and Leona Harmon Burke of Disko, Indiana, died a few minutes later in an automobile accident on December 18, three miles north of Menotne, Ind. A third cousin, Jack Douglas Burke, 20, son of Mr. And Mrs. Den Burke of Akron, Ind., formerly of this city, who was driving the car at the time of the accident, suffered several broken ribs, but was released from the hospital after treatment. The three youths were in a 1947 Ford that careened to the opposite side of the highway into the path of an on-coming truck, which collided head-on with the car. One side of the Ford had swerved off the pavement, and in an attempt to cut back onto the highway, the youthful driver lost control of the vehicle, it was said here this week. Jerry Patrick was employed at North Manchester, Ind., and was living with his uncle and aunt, the parents of Jack Douglas. He was a graduate of the Paintsville High School, class of 1954, and was a popular young man among his classmates and friends. Besides his parents, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Argus Richardson, Paintsville; one half-brother, Tom Patrick, Jr., Bascom, Ohio., and a large family of relatives in this locality. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. today at the Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Claude Preston and Rev. H.P. Willis officiating. Special music was by the Tom's Creek Quartet. Burial was made in the Patrick Cemetery at Leander under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home. James Morris Burke, formerly a resident of Bonanza, was a junior at Gilead High School, of Disko. Surviving besides his parents are two sisters, Velma and Brenda Burke, and his grandfather, James Harmon, of Ottway, Ohio. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Akron, Indiana, and burial was made there. The youths are the grandsons of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Burke of Riceville, and the family is well-known in this county. Paintsville Herald December 22, 1954
